The eggs laid by the small snakes are also large in comparison to the size of the parent. The Barbados threadsnake lays a tiny egg which is about the shape and size of a long grain of rice. Other snakes lay more spherical eggs. Although not much is known about the Barbados threadsnake, it is believed to feed mainly on ants, termites, and other insect larvae found in the soil.

This feeding habit is as a result of its habit of burrowing. Not much is known concerning the distribution, abundance, or the ecology of this diminutive snake. However, scientists believe that they could be threatened and possibly facing extinction because much of the original forest of Barbados has been cleared.

It is believed that these species require forests habitats for survival. But then each of the two hatchlings would be half the normal size, perhaps too small to function as a snake or in the environment," said Hedges. Hedges has discovered and described more than 65 new species of amphibians and reptiles throughout the Caribbean in the course of his genetic and evolutionary studies.

In the paper in which he describes the Leptotyphlops carlae snake that he discovered on Barbados, he also describes another new snake that he discovered on the nearby island of St. Lucia, a new threadsnake that is nearly as small as the Barbados snake. Finding new species, collecting them, and naming them is a necessary first step for other types of research.

Hedges said this exploration and discovery of new species also is critical for protecting biodiversity.
