Knowledge is a mere collection of facts; and one can have a head full of them, but to no useful purpose. Intution is the ability to connect seemingly unconnected facts, and place them together like pieces of a puzzle to create a picture of "genuine" invention.
Knowledge is a box of pieces. Intuition is the "X-Factor" enabling one to see how the pieces fit together. Tesla was a scientific-technical genius. That does not make him a philosophical genius, or a writing genius. To try to separate instinct from life is like trying to learn about fire by touching it, every time. The interoceptive, exteroceptive, proprioceptive, and somatosensory systems are all inputs to instinct responses. The attempt to regard any life function as separate from instinct is schoolboy drivel.
We humans developed functions that are slower than instinct, yet serve to enhance our cooperation, cogitation, communication, cognition. Those, even though they are barely used, enable us to communicate around the globe in an instant, and have the satisfied stomachs, places of peace, and confidence of attention, to ask, and consider questions like this one and many others.
Yet, without the learned responses of instinct, and emotions, we would not survive the challenges of life. To help us survive. All organisms have instincts. Such instincts as humans have were all well in place long before we evolved "consciousness". These things operate at a sub-conscious level for the most part. They are tied to the same primitive systems that give rise to emotional responses.
So, they are beyond the reach of conscious thought And thus can be said to "transcend" consciousness. Good thing, too. As Robert Ornstein points out in his book, "The Evolution of Consciousness", we would not have survived as a species if we had to sit there and think about every little potential danger.
Big fuzzy kitty-cat. I wonder if it's friendly? A baby animal gets right up on its feet depending on the animal of course. But a human must live for about a year learning all it can about its environment, and literally growing into the creature who must crawl before it can stand up. In the same way it must learn intellectually about its environment before it can act "as if" it had instincts.
Such "instincts" are better in people who have learned more or learned better about that environment in which they find themselves. Gaeland says our instincts are "fight or flight, survival, nurturing our young, mating, protecting our territory, to name a few," but all of these except perhaps how to have sex are learned.
Instinct is where creativity comes from. And creativity inspires new creations--that which has never been conceived. Knowledge is already available and just gets passed on from one person to the next.
There is also the fact that knowing something doesn't necessarily mean you understand it.
