For over a century, LSE has pioneered legal education and scholarship as a central part of its mission. But this was law as a practical discipline — the rules and methods by which society and economy are regulated — informed by the social sciences. The contrast with the Oxbridge tradition was stark, with its focus on studying leading cases to the exclusion of legislation.

LSE ventured to differ, and it is for this reason that it came to play an important role in developing the academic study of such subjects as commercial law, labour law, tax law, family law, human rights law and public law. A concern with legislation was driven by deeper theoretical and political motivations. Driven by an agenda that inquired into the social forces that made the law and the formative effect that law has on society, LSE scholars were more interested in normal workings than pathological instances, on the everyday rather than the aberrational, and on the general operation of public policy rather than a limited focus on judicial processes.

Law teaching began when LSE was founded in It was part-time and in the evening. Subjects were taught to non-law students, and often co-taught with those from other disciplines.

Among those teaching were R. Oppenheim author of International Law. Your final degree classification is based on your performance in the second and third years of study. Some of the optional courses in your last two years are examined by essay. You must pass each set of yearly examinations to progress to the next stage of the degree. There is also the option do to a dissertation, which is a research based extended essay, in your final year. Academic mentors — an academic member of staff who you will meet with at least once a term and who can help with any academic, administrative or personal questions you have. They offer confidential and free services such as student counselling, a peer support scheme, arranging exam adjustments and run groups and workshops.

IT help — support available 24 hours a day to assist with all of your technology queries. LSE Faith Centre — home to LSE's diverse religious activities and transformational interfaith leadership programmes, as well as a space for worship, prayer and quiet reflection.

It includes Islamic prayer rooms and a main space for worship. It is also a space for wellbeing classes on campus and is open to all students and staff from all faiths and none. Language Centre — the centre specialises in offering language courses targeted to the needs of students and practitioners in the social sciences. We offer pre-course English for Academic Purposes programmes; English language support during your studies; modern language courses in 9 languages; proofreading, translation and document authentication and language learning community activities.

If admitted to the double degree programme, students then transfer to Columbia Law School for two years there, the first of which shall, if successfully completed based on the requirements of both LSE and Columbia Law School, satisfy the requirements of their third year at LSE.

This is a qualifying degree, meaning you can go straight from graduating to taking the LPC Legal Practice Course , and recent leavers have secured training contracts at world renowned law firms, whilst others have been taken on as analysts and consultants. Others still have used the legal and social insights gained in their degree to set up their own NGOs or start their own businesses.

The analytical, critical and communication skills and legal and social insights gained within the LLB provide an excellent foundation for many careers and can be applied to a wide range of industries.

The profession of solicitor To qualify as a solicitor, you will need to serve for two years under a training contract with a practising solicitor, and complete a Legal Practice Course approved by the Law Society.

Most law graduates will normally be granted a certificate of completion of the academic stage of training and may attend a Legal Practice Course before entering into a training contract.
