Although Luke is destined to become the most powerful Jedi of all time, right now he is simply a pawn in a power struggle. Instead of facing him in battle, Luke calls Vader's bluff, challenging him to try and catch Luke in his X-Wing, resulting in the Dark Lord of the Sith sparing Solo to give chase partly because he believes Luke's friends make him weaker. While Luke's decision is tactical, Star Wars 16 strongly indicates he very much fears battling Darth Vader again, which is why it's surprising to see the Sith disagree with this assessment. Vader is seemingly under the impression that his son is potentially arrogant and without fear, which just isn't the case. Luke has a healthy and justifiable fear of facing his father again, having admitted to himself that he has much more to learn on his Jedi path before he's able to directly confront Vader once more. Anakin's redemption and Sidious' death brought balance to the Force , and Anakin fulfilled his destiny as the Chosen One. At his father's request, Luke removed Darth Vader's helmet from Anakin's head, allowing the former Sith Lord to look upon his son with his own eyes for the first and last time.

Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep.
It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself. With Padme mostly. He turned to the Dark side cause of this, but this feeling gave him benfits.

I don't know if Vader loved Luke, he only saw him as an object, the same way he saw Padme as an object; they were both objects that would help him to gain complete dominatance of the Galaxy. Fear of lossing his loved ones' drove him to the dark side, fear of lossing them wil drive him back. Vader, didn't love.
